Mesa Mayor Scott Smith was host of an event today as the US Attorney for the District of Arizona, Diane J. Humetewa - presented a plaque to the Mesa Attorney Office - Prosecution Division and Mesa Police Department honoring Mesa’s participation with special awards.
Mesa was recognized for Project Safe Neighborhoods which targets gang members and firearms recovery; made possible by federal grants through the Arizona Criminal Justice System, forming a partnership with VCIT - Violent Crime Impact Team - and the US Attorney’s Office.
Impressive is the fact that Mesa Police arrested over 2000 gang members, drug dealers, felons, recovering 4900 firearms. Mesa Assistant City Prosecutor Sabrina De Costa, on loan from the US Attorney’s Office, successfully helping with 38 cases. The grants reimbursed Mesa for the personnel costs.
Mesa Mayor Scott Smith stated “The City of Mesa is committed to keeping our residents safe. By targeting violent crimes committed by gang members, we can achieve the greatest impact on public safety.”
Mayor Smith brings a real sense of support toward community safety, making it a priority. Thank you Mayor!

The City of Mesa, Neighborhood Services posted an article today featuring an opportunity to volunteer or donate items for the East Valley Homeless Project which will be held in Mesa.
The city is providing the service through Mesa’s Human Services Program partnering with a variety of 10 non-profit and government agencies making the project possible. Assistance with housing, medical, and identification to name a few.
Showers, haircuts, lunch! Volunteers and donations are needed to assist in various areas. New bath towels, socks, underwear, money donations for lunch - volunteers and guests, and backpacks are some items needed. Perhaps serving meals, assisting the homeless connect with agencies, or distributing clothing will be the place you want to help in making this a successful east valley resource opportunity!
The East Valley Homeless Project in Mesa on April 17th from 8 AM-3 PM at City of Grace Church - 655 E. University Drive.

Wow, a woman getting items out of her car while parked at St. Timothy’s Catholic Community was approached by a man with a gun intending to rob her!
Apparently she had a faster draw - when she started praying he lowered his pistol and walked away! I’d say he was shot down; he was also arrested by Mesa Police for attempted robbery. This happened at 1:00 PM - midday - always be cautious no matter where, when, or what time it is! At least you can be ready with a prayer…..

What a great way to spend Saturday, October 11th - a FREE pancake breakfast with your friends and neighbors in District 6!
This is your opportunity to hear from Councilmember Scott Somers, ask questions, get answers and meet with other city officials that will be on hand. An informal atmosphere with plenty to eat while learning about those things that effect you in your district and in the City of Mesa. Be sure to come!
The breakfast is being held at Fire Station 212 (firemen are great cooks!), 2430 S. Ellsworth Road. That’s just north of Baseline on Ellsworth on the west side of the street. Hours are 8:00 am to 10:00 am.
While you’re scheduling - Saturday, October 18th the city is hosting the GAIN event that brings Police, Fire, Solid Waste, other department employees plus Council Members into neighborhoods.

Having a small business or getting started these days may have some of us wondering, how is it possible?
A couple of weeks ago after attending the 4th Annual East Valley Minority & Small Business Symposium - I came away with so much good information it created a new inspired vision. All things are possible - avoid looking at circumstances and get busy with a plan!

December 8th marks the date for the next crucial meeting that has the potential to open a gateway to remarkable growth and opportunity for the southeast valley and northern Pinal County.
That meeting is a group of southeast mayors and government officials that will discuss items including trust land development of the 275 mile sq. mile Superstition Vistas, transportation, and Phoenix-Gateway Airport. The group: Gateway-Northern Pinal Area Alliance of Government that include mayors of Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Mesa, Florence, with Supervisors from Pinal County, and Arizona State Land Department Commissioner.
Mesa Mayor Scott Smith surely vocalizes all concerns to work effectively to coordinate efforts.
Uppermost in my mind are transportation needs, making sure people that live in these areas now - and in the future - have adequate, safe, plentiful transportation methods including good roads, freeway access, transit bus, and/or rail. Someone needs to come up with the finances to take care of their constituents, residents, students, employees, mothers transporting children, fathers traveling miles to work - people come first!
Meetings will be scheduled quarterly, the December 8th meeting is being held at the Queen Creek Public Library (Ellsworth & Ocotillo) and open to the public.

We’ve all seen or heard about many of the disasters that happen in our country, but what about you and your family? Are you ready? Captain Gabe Sezate, Emergency Management, Mesa Fire Department - has a day planned for us!
You’ll want to show up Saturday, September 27th from 9am - 2 pm when Mesa Fire and Police will be on hand along with others to help our community know how to be prepared!
There will be plenty to do and see, including free seminars on Family Disaster Preparedness, what do with pets, and how about your employees - all critical information we need to know.
Another plus is family entertainment, free prizes, and a kids catch and release fish tank - the day will be educational and fun. Many community partners are hosting the event making available this wonderful opportunity.

Lonnie - the 12 year old that was missing has been found in Laveen! Praise God for answered prayer!!
How thankful and relieved her parents must be who recently moved from Laveen to Mesa. Good news for family and friends!
