Money Grab

June 1st, 2006, 12:13 pm by elburton

The ineffectiveness of government has reared its ugly head here in our own state and could trickle down to our community. On the front page of today’s Tribune the headline read, "Polytechnic’s Growth In Peril." Why you ask? Because our elected representatives have no concept of what a dollar is, how hard it is to make, and how to budget it. The State Legislature agreed to a package for ASU’s Polytechnic at Williams Gateway. What they agreed to is to allow ASU to borrow $103 million, great, but they backed the loan up with $7.5 million per year to ASU to pay it back.Where this gets interesting is that in order to get this deal through, the Legislature had to be what they call "Fair" to the other two state universities and give the same deal to them even though they have no need or purpose for the money. This equitable principle was led by Senate President Ken Bennett a Republican. It seems to me that spending is now the mantra of both parties. It appears that this is nothing more than a money grab for everyone involved or not involved for that matter.ASU has invested in the Williams Gateway area and should be supported because of ongoing operations and potential growth. If the other Universities want a piece if the pie, let them come to the table with a plan rather than simply a hand held out. This legislation is absurd and a grand waste of time, your money and shows that when it comes to reality, neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have a concept of what it takes to turn a buck in this state, unless of course it is your buck, then they become masters.
