TaxFest

June 9th, 2006, 2:42 pm by elburton

Considering my outspoken rants over the proposed property tax that Mesa residents just voted down this may come as a shock to some of you. I recently received an email from a close friend that I thought I would share. It illustrates in vivid detail what is wrong with this country. It demonstrates just how intrusive government has become. It shows how government is like a cancer, if left unchecked it grows to the point where it kills the host. Ladies and gentlemen, boy’s and girls, you are the host and the cancer is taxes. It is killing you and you have yet to diagnose yourself. Let me share with you just a few of the taxes that you are responsible for every day of your working life: Accounts Receivable Tax, Building Permit Tax, Capital Gains Tax, CDL license Tax, Cigarette Tax, Corporate Income Tax, Court Fines, (indirect taxes), Dog License Tax, Federal Unemployment Tax, (FUTA), Fishing License Tax, Food License Tax. Fuel permit tax, Gasoline Tax,(42 cents per gallon), Hunting License Tax, Inheritance Tax Interest expense, (tax on the money), Inventory tax IRS Interest Charges, (tax on top of tax), IRS Penalties, (tax on top of tax), Liquor Tax, Local Income Tax, Luxury Taxes, Marriage License Tax, Medicare Tax, Property Tax, Real Estate Tax, Septic Permit Tax, Service Charge Taxes, Social Security Tax, Road Usage Taxes, (Truckers), Sales Taxes, Recreational Vehicle Tax, Road Toll Booth Taxes, School Tax, State Income Tax, State Unemployment Tax, (SUTA), Telephone federal excise tax, Telephone federal universal service fee tax, Telephone federal, state and, local surcharge taxes, Telephone minimum usage surcharge tax, Telephone recurring and non-recurring charges tax, Telephone state and local tax, Telephone usage charge tax, Toll Bridge Taxes, Toll Tunnel Taxes, Traffic Fines, (indirect taxation), Trailer Registration Tax, Utility Taxes, Vehicle License Registration Tax, Vehicle Sales Tax, Watercraft Registration Tax, Well Permit Tax, Workers Compensation Tax. 100 years ago not one of these taxes existed. Before that we were the most prosperous nation on the face of the earth. There was no such thing as a national debt or a trade deficit. We had the largest middle class in the world. There was such a thing as a single income family where mothers had the chance to stay at home and raise their children. We owned things back then, now our government owns us. We have become slaves to taxes, no longer working for ourselves we find ourselves indebted to the government.

Thank you Bob Saemisch for your work

I really didn’t know Bob Saiemisch but I knew who he was and saw him many times as he stood before the Mesa City Council - as the architect that will long be remembered. He seemed like a quite man, but there was no mistake he was well respected and his words meant a lot as he gave opinions and moved projects forward and upward for the betterment of Mesa. He left behind brilliant work that will be a constant reminder of his presence. Thank you Mr. Saemisch for sharing your professional skills, creativity, and energy toward the many projects you’ve been a part of; providing this community with beautiful buildings, unique designs and works that we as a city will always be proud of , and most importantly - deepest sympathies to your wonderful family.

Mesa PD get well deserved funds

June 9th, 2006, 4:44 am by Sharon

Of all the employees in the City of Mesa, I’m very happy to see that the Mesa Police Department received the funding needed to bring salaries up to par with the market value. Well deserved!I for one am grateful the market value salaries for the Mesa PD will be brought up, cost of living increases will be a reality, and their own security in their jobs is something they won’t have to worry about. Peace of mind is worth a lot knowing your own community, the one you’re protecting is making sure you are taken care of as well - which means families and children.I am thankful to those that stayed on and could wait it out, an asset as he/she continue as seasoned officers having the skills and valuable knowledge to pass on to new officers coming on board. To acknowledge those that left, they served this community well and had to do what was best for their situation at the time. Hopefully, a new chief will be named soon which will finalize this season of change and uncertainty. I know Interim Chief Fowler is doing an excellent job - I know too that a permanent person in place will be a relief simply because we know the current situation is temporary and there will be an adjustment. Since City Manager Chris Brady named a short list there must be plenty of anxiety in the air. I’m impressed that Assistant Chief George Gascon, LAPD, visited with some of our officers which included ride-alongs, speaks fluent Spanish, has longevity with the LAPD, and we have positive feedback from Joe Shelley, President - Mesa Police Association and Bryan Soller, President - Mesa Fraternal Order of Police. I hope I have the opportunity to meet Gascon as our new Police Chief.
