What about the children?

June 10th, 2006, 2:04 am by Sharon

I didn’t realize so many programs that effect children would be the result of a city that voted down a propery tax.Mesa Libraries won’t have the children’s reading program this summer - in the past there have been 14,000 children enrolled. This isn’t good.Today I learned the Boys and Girls Club usually recieve funding, they are going to be affected greatly. There are several branches including the East Valley Boys and Girls Club and a branch at the Williams Gateway Airport. They are in financial trouble.Cutting resource officers at the schools could have a real adverse effect on our children. Kids today need a good role model and a reminder of the law, to respect it.We were forewarned of these cuts and given the opportunity to list our own preferances as we met earlier in the year at community budget hearing. How can these things be solved - each is valuable and serves a good purpose in our community.

Free evening at the MAC

If you’re a member of the Mesa Art Center and didn’t attend the free reception - you missed a great time! There were also areas open to the public - it was an evening for families.Mesa Contemporary Arts were on display for all to enjoy, what talent and beautiful pieces crafted by each artist in their own unique design. The Mesa Art Center gave a super evening to the community - it was a real treat. There was a live band that played - they were really good! People were dancing, sitting in groups visiting, a long table of great hordourves, a special room for children to experience hands-on creativity. It was special to see families, children, young people, working adults and retired men and women, gathered in such a beautiful facility enjoying this opportunity to celebrate the creativity of others. One theme was ‘Teaching by Example’ featuring the artwork of Mesa Arts Center Visual Arts Faculty, plus pieces from several other artists. If you love different mediums of art, a festive atmosphere with music, food, and drink, then you won’t want to miss upcoming invitations.I’m glad I went!
