Hoops of Hope tomorrow

November 30th, 2007, 4:59 pm by Sharon

The 4th year for Hoops of Hope, events are happening all over the valley to raise funds for HIV/AIDS to build a medical lab in Africa - a country hit hard with this life-threatening condition.  Many children are left as orphans - all funds go to build the lab.

Go to www.hoopsofhope.org for more information in your area.  The event is from 7:45 am to 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 1.

One I know of is at the Word of Grace Chandler Gym at:  at 255 W. Warner Rd., Chandler, AZ 85224.

Glasper - on to Florida to visit Pan!

November 30th, 2007, 4:42 pm by Sharon

Good news today in the presidential search for Mesa Community College.

Chancellor Rufus Glasper, MCCCD, will be leading a site visit team in early December, which includes the tri-chairs plus some members of the search team committee, to South Campus, Broward Community College in Florida and presidential candidate Provost Dr. Shouan Pan.

He was my vote when interviewing the five candidates, fitting the criteria needed for MCC to move ahead.

Governor names that tree!

November 30th, 2007, 2:15 pm by Sharon

Yesterday’s Tribune gives us insight as to how Governor Napolitano presented the newly decorated tree in the lobby of the state Capitol tower.

The tree was lit during a ceremony to promote “Hope for the Holidays,” which supports a program for children of incarcerated parents, by providing gifts.

In naming the tree, the Governor took into consideration what it actually represents, saying “I think we’re celebrating a number of holidays,”  calling it the “Holiday Tree.”   Also, commenting that Christianity is the only religion that puts up a tree as a holiday symbol.

I like that idea, as I see celebrating the true meaning of Christmas as a year round, everyday attitude and action in doing those things that will help those around us.  Those less fortunate, who need a lending hand which can come through many different way and means:  starting with our neighbor, our community, city, and state.

MCC - Chosing a President

November 29th, 2007, 2:30 pm by Sharon

After attending the presidential candidate interviews for Mesa Community College, I began to look through the bios offered.  Meeting all five personally was helpful too.

MCC has had much success and victories as well.  The article the Tribune offered on declining enrollment prompted me to think more about its next president.

Although one could find something positive about each candidate, Dr. Shouan Pan, Provost of Broward Community College-South Campus since 2003, in Florida clearly stands above the rest.

With a long history in executive administration enhanced by his Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration, Master of Education in College Student Personnel Administration, and Bachelor of Arts in English - plus the list of student related involvement is persuasive.

Success at MCC will depend on someone strong with a vast amount of excellence in their professional experience, community involvement, and proven record which Dr. Pan has.  His previous positions include:

Executive Dean of Instruction and Student Services-Florida, Dean of Student Life-Pennsylvania, both community colleges, Recruitment and Retention Administrator and Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at NAU, Director of Residence Life at Central AZ College, Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of International Education in China.

His community involvement spans from:

Board Member of a Chamber of Commerce, Commission Member of Holocaust Education FL Dept. of Education, Co-Chair Southern Regional Consortium of Learning Communities, Principal, Vice President, Chinese Cultural Assoc., Board of Directors National Finance Academy, Vice Chair United Way Resource Management Cabinet and Fund Allocation Committee & Volunteer.

With honors and awards:

Educator of the Year, Executive Leadership Institute, Chancellor’s Leadership Seminar, Kellogg Fellow, Honorary Member Golden Key International Honor Society, Research Excellence, Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

To hear Dr. Pan speak you understand his overall value of education, concern for jobs, social justice, and a diverse population.  All the attributes to lead MCC - in my opinion!

What happened after the Governor’s FCI?

November 19th, 2007, 2:12 am by Sharon

In May 2007, Governor Napolitano had met with and received approval from the White House to bring the Faith and Community Initiatives Conference to AZ and to be the new conference model

I’m wondering - how this has worked out in the many communities that participated; are they making a difference in their community? - collaborating with others to bring about social transformation

There are great needs all over our state and nation; it is possible to make a big difference.  The Governor went to the White House out of community concern.  It was also after meeting with a group of conservative pastors that understood and caught the vision.

President Bush supports the states being involved in FCI - he surely sees these needs as do we in our own community.  FCI allows the states to highlight their local efforts through state agencies, non-profits, federal funds, and business.  Are we utilizing these along with our faith-based community?  Are the outreach departments doing their part?

I know for a fact that Word of Grace, through their Outreach Department, engage those within the congregation to participate in numerous ways and continue to be a significant contributor to our community in Mesa.   Our pastor, Dr. Kinnaman was actually chair of the White House FCI Conference.  Having volunteered in several efforts I know how deeply rewarding it is to give to another in need.

The conference theme: One Arizona - Compassion, Collaboration, Action -  some that participated: Prison Fellowship, Food for the Hungry, Phoenix Seminary and Alma Vision Hispanic TV Net work, United Way, Office of the Mayor-Phoenix, Maricopa County Attorney Office, and many more.

Workshops focused on:  Grants, initiatives with HIV/AIDS and malaria, workforce development, homelessness, emergency preparedness, substance abuse recovery, mental health care, foster care, prison initiatives, community development strategies, health promotion and disease prevention, veterans issues, marriage and family initiatives, and vulnerable populations of children and youth, elders, the poor, and victims of domestic violence.

Are we joining in, making a difference, using the potential we have, in areas we’ve been given the ability to help?  It is a great joy to give, and a very humble place to receive when in a place of need.  I’m so thankful, I’ve experienced both.

Mesa PD address shooting, gangs, road rage

November 15th, 2007, 10:27 pm by Sharon

Chief Gascon reveals details of last night’s shooting in Mesa which involved a 20 year old man that used violence against his mother.

The incident ended with two police officers having to use deadly force when the man refused to comply to commands as he aggressively moved toward officers with a 9″ hunting knife with 5″ blade

The timeliness of the briefing was important to the community - a tragic ending to the family and the officers involved who immediately were put on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Keeping Mesa Police busy also brought 85 arrests this week as they tracked down suspected gang members, seizing drugs and weapons.

Also, be careful - think twice and use good etiquette on the road.  Another story on road rage reported today resulting in heavy cuts and a broken nose as two men in their vehicles traveled on Mesa Drive.  One followed the other to a liquor store at Broadway to confront the offender - it’s dangerous out there!

With a focus on proactively targeting crime, the Mesa Police Department has brought about a safer community and reduced crime rates.

Family Needs Help - Loss of Parents

November 14th, 2007, 6:34 pm by Sharon

Your help is needed to assist in funeral expenses of a family in Mesa where the children of the family suffered the loss of both parents this past weekend.

As a community, we have an opportunity to meet the need of a family - if you can contribute or come to the fund raiser, please do what you can.

The 5th grader at Adams Elementary School has drawn support from the school and his teacher, Gloria Chavez, to help raise funds to help meet this need.

A car wash is being held tomorrow - Thursday, November 15, from 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM at Adams Elementary School, at Longmore and 8th Avenue, 738 S. Longmore, Mesa.

A Ruelas Memorial Fund has been set up at Desert Schools Federal Credit Union for anyone that wishes to donate directly.  (any DSFCU)

If you need more information or have questions, please contact Gloria Chavez at 480-232-9157.

What’s up with gas prices?

November 8th, 2007, 11:05 pm by Sharon

One of today’s leading EV Tribune articles was about gas prices. Approaching $3 a gallon is a bit much for me and I wonder about others on fixed or limited incomes.

Mesa’s senior population, teens, people commuting to work, school….make traveling by car less desirable. I know it does for me. What are we do to, stay home?

Valley Metro Bus Service, Light Rail extension down Main Street, carpooling - all look to be viable choices in the near future.

The index featuring price changes from last year, comparing the East Valley, Scottsdale, Arizona, and National statistics provide some positive feedback in that the East Valley remains the lowest cost per gallon.

Waving us ahead

November 8th, 2007, 3:06 am by Sharon

Wednesday, the EV Tribune featured front page was a joyful sight - a celebration that provided support from voters to move forward with Waveyard; a resort and adventure park sure to put Mesa on the “map”.

In the background are Mesa familiar faces Rex Griswold, Mayoral candidate and Bryan Jeffries, President United Mesa Firefighters Association, who supported the development - now realizing the victory are all smiles.

A great day for west Mesa and the city.  Living in east Mesa, I’m seeing many areas developed and business continues to grow, especially along US 60.  At Signal Butte just south of the freeway a huge shopping area with restaurants, IMAX theater, fitness center,  a variety of shopping is filling in on both sides of Signal Butte.

The same business growth also at Greenfield just south of US60.  A Banner Gateway Hospital at Higley just south of the freeway is coming along, a shopping center just beyond it.  Also, the hospital at Crismon, just north of the freeway - making great progress, and other medical facilities, offices, and apartments throughout the area, plus others not yet identified at Sossaman.

Making sure developers pay required impact fees necessary to develop the infrastructure around them is an essential part of being accountable and resourceful - ensuring the provision of funds in order to keep up with the progress we are enjoying.
