A Better Way

June 30th, 2006, 11:41 am by elburton

I picked up my copy of the Tribune today and there it was, above the fold, "E.V. Gains with ASU’s Growth," "University expected to add $4 Billion yearly to local economy." The additions of ASU’s Polytechnic campus as well as such projects as the new River View Project are the direction we need to go. It is a direction we should have been going long ago. There are two schools of thought when it comes to a city in financial crisis, one you can raise taxes to increase revenue. We saw how that was received by an already overburdened citizenry. The second is that you can look to the future and stimulate growth through investing in money making projects. As an admitted conservative I tend to like the second option better.Sure, we could have had a property tax, given the money to our government and trusted that they should spend it properly, but what if they didn’t? What if at the end of this tax dollar money grab we had nothing to show for it? When you stimulate business growth in an area, and I am not talking about putting a check cashing store on every corner, you have something left over at the end, a business, an actual physical location that generates money. It even gets better; it creates jobs which create tax payers which create tax revenues, everybody wins. It is a trickle down process which poises us to sustain life in the future. Tax increases are like putting a butterfly bandage on a hemorrhaging wound, it might stop a little of the bleeding and you can say that you tried but the patient will die in the end. Investing in sustainable growth and encouraging business to flourish is the right antidote for a city in crisis. What we need to do is to bring this city into the future, make it a place where business wants to be, where people want to shop and go to school. What we don’t need is to throw up our hands and scare people away by saying if you move here we are going to solve all our problems by taking more of you hard earned money in the form of taxes. If you’re short on cash and can’t pay them then you can visit one of our many pawn shops or lounge in the air-conditioned comfort of a check cashing store, if one isn’t on your corner, it will be shortly, give me a break…

Getting it Right

June 28th, 2006, 10:15 am by elburton

I wanted to take the time to thank the Editorial staff at the East Valley Tribune for the piece they wrote in Tuesday’s edition. Now I know that the content of the piece was not on a subject near and dear to Mesa, and I know that this Blog was designed to address issues in Mesa, but, when our local paper gets it right, they need to hear from their subscribers that their words are not just dying a miserable death in a land fill. The piece was titled, "We want the bad guys caught before they act," and it is right on the money. Since the events of 911 we have seen this country polarized, we are at war with an enemy who has no creed, no country of origin, no border… they are here and everywhere. This war is a perfect storm of sorts for those who dislike the current administration; it provides them with the ability to politicize it to their advantage. Case in point the content of the editorial I mentioned at the opening. In it the Editorial staff points out that the arrest of the seven men in Miami who were plotting attacks on American soil. There are those among us who believe that these arrests were more of a matter of convenience and timing rather than a serious strike against terror. They claim that these men were nothing more than a group of disgruntled, uneducated keystone cop styled wannabe terrorists. They advance the idea that the Bush Administration is making a mountain out of a mole hill with this one. The Tribune Editorial staff got it right, they reminded us that the 19 men who boarded planes and flew them into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and attempted to hit another target in Washington DC (if it were not for the brave men and women of United Flight 93 they might have) were nothing more than hapless idiots that nobody took seriously except a few FBI agents, one or which was located here in Arizona. The Tribune Editorial staff gets two thumbs up and a snap from this reader and contributor for recognizing that today’s idiot could become tomorrow’s biggest mass murderer and politicizing any aspect of this war on terror by either side serves nothing more than to further divide a country already standing on the edge of a vast valley of discontent.

New Era In Journalism

June 23rd, 2006, 12:01 pm by elburton

My style, my version of a Blog is a bit different than what you may or may not be use to; I write what I refer to as "Blogatorials." With the advent of the web and the popularity of Blogs, anybody can get their views, opinions or rants out into the world. Publishing at any level has always been a club for a select few, the media elite is not just a catchy phrase but a reality. Publishers and editors have always held control in the palm of their hands and as a result many good writers have had no other venue to express their viewpoints or their ideas until now. That has all changed, now a housewife in Middle America can garner as much attention as journalist in a large media market. I guess what I am saying here is that I would encourage those of you who read this Blog or others to get as involved as you can, respond to the people who contribute and contemplate contributing yourself. We live in a new era of journalism, every citizen can bring something new to the process, and every citizen has an opinion that is relevant to their city, state and this country as a whole. I want to thank the Tribune for having this forum, for caring what citizens of Mesa have to say. Keep this Blog alive by continuing to support it, by continuing to keep the lines of responsible communication aligned. We are entering into a very heavy political season and input from the city of Mesa can have an impact not only for us here, but nationally as those who seek office look for direction from all of us. Have a great weekend and hug a Blogger if you meet one.

Fringe Dwellers

June 19th, 2006, 1:48 pm by elburton

Since I began writing this Blog I have attempted to walk a fine line between bitter partisanship and a hippie view of flower power love. I have come to realize that we are all so different that we will never see eye to eye on every issue in this country or this city for that matter. I have learned that the first key to progress is that we find common ground and realize that we have to just agree to disagree on many subjects while tempering those disagreements with respect.Over the weekend I read a piece in the Tribune written by Sam Coppersmith a Democratic party activist and former member of the U.S. House and I realized that my utopian view of both parties getting along and respecting one another for their views is the equivalent of a drug induced pipe dream. Mr. Coppersmith in his bitter partisan attack showed the true colors of the radical left. He showed that they have no interest in working together rather a stated position and attitude that everything is the fault of the right, they control everything so therefore they are to blame for anything. Now I am no Pollyanna, I realize that where you have elements of the radical left fringe you will also find elements of the radical right. The key is that we keep both in exactly the same place they are right now, relegated to the outer fringe sucking the life out of their fellow fringe dwellers. Mr. Coppersmith attacked with reckless abandon the right wing of our political system lumping them all into one ball. He used obscure examples as a template to show the conflict in the conservative movement using issues that even as a nation we will all never agree as some sort of litmus test for the truth. He fails to see his radical ideology for what it is… a partisan effort to co-opt everyone into his world, his way of thinking because he knows better than we do what is good for us. I have said it before and I will say it again, anyone who stands before you and tells you that they know the truth, that they have all the answers and that their way is the only true and enlightened way is full of, well you know what I mean. Here is the truth, we are all never going to agree on everything, what we can agree on is that our goal should be to enhance those areas where we agree, make them better while at the same time attempting to bridge the gap where we don’t agree. People like Sam Coppersmith and members of the radical left and radical right have an agenda that would widen the chasm between people, further divide them into armies who serve an unholy master bent on maintaining control through fear tactics. Republicans will no more destroy this country than Democrats; however, the radical fringes of both these parties will continue to attempt to unite armies to wage battle for the control. It is up to those of us who find ourselves caught in the middle to stand up and defend this democracy because if you haven’t noticed we are at war within our own borders and the armies of the radical right and the radical left are gearing up for the final assault that will determine who controls your destiny. These fringe dwelling mental midgets who masquerade as leaders and spokesmen are a threat, don’t buy into the hype and hysteria they are peddling.

Chicken Little

June 16th, 2006, 11:07 am by elburton

The older I get the more I have learned about life and the more I have learned how to say that I am sorry and I may have been wrong. Information is key in the decision making process and too much information is never a bad thing. Here in Mesa we have just gone through a rough patch where residents were pitted one against the other as the city fought over an ever inflating budget, a proposed property tax and what the city council has portrayed as dwindling revenue in the face of massive expenditures. The city council has claimed that they have cut every conceivable expense from the budget and the only answer to rising costs was the need to implement a property tax. This is where I have to step in and state that I may have been wrong. I supported the property tax, armed with what I thought were facts I wandered out into the world and attempted to sway voters into voting "Yes", that this city was in desperate need of increasing revenue to shore up some of the essential services that were threatened. It has come to my attention that one area the city council didn’t cut was one of their precious little perks, car allowances for the political elite. To the tune of over $200,000 a year they have kept that little benefit while wailing in public about the cutbacks that will have to be made in services and staff. What else have they failed to cut? How many of you get a car allowance for your job? Tough times require a sacrifice for all, with gas prices at an all time high and with no end in sight to the pain at the pump we are all experiencing why are the politically elite among us getting a break while we have to budget in our lives to compensate? Which essential services and staff members could have been saved if only those who were connected stepped up and sacrificed what amounts to a bonus for them? The lesson I have learned here is that politicians today are like "Chicken Little" from the children’s book, they run around screaming about the sky falling. I have said it before and I will say it again, government at any level is not a money making body, they are a money taking entity and it is up top all of us to make sure they don’t take it all.

Tolerance Is A Tricky Proposition

June 14th, 2006, 1:11 pm by elburton

Tolerance is defined in the dictionary as follows: 1- The capacity for respecting the beliefs or practices of others. 2- Leeway for variations from a standard. Tolerance is a word I have been hearing a lot lately. It is a word that has religious, philosophical and political implications. Tolerance is a wonderful word, it is a wonderful concept. Unfortunately, it is a concept that is being abused. We are being asked on a regular basis to embrace tolerance, but what are we being asked to be tolerant of? I am not going to point the finger here and say that I am speaking of this issue or that issue. I am going to suggest that before you embrace something, ask yourself if this is really something that we need to embrace as a society. The second definition of the word is a "leeway for variations of a standard." So we have established that we do have standards from which we work. My contention is that we are forever changing the standard, therefore as a society we are forced to tolerate more and more. I suspect that there is an ever decaying ring around that which protects society. I know that in the name of tolerance we have come a long way. We have seen civil rights rise from the ashes of a dream to become a reality. We have moved from the dark ages of aggression to an era of spreading liberty and freedom to people around the world. However, it is imperative that as a society we don’t tolerate too much and as a society I fear that is exactly where we are. Ask yourself if you are comfortable raising your children today? Do you like what your children see daily? Do you like what they are taught in public schools? Do you like the information that is out there at the tips of their precious fingers? Are the stories of teachers having sex with their students comforting to you? Do you like the examples being set by some of the corporate executives that are on trial for embezzling money? Do you like the great political divide that has occurred in this country and the vitriolic language that is being used between the parties? Do you like what the courts in this country have become? You see tolerance is what got us where we are. Good and bad, tolerance has delivered us to this time in history. The danger is that if we begin to tolerate anything eventually we will tolerate everything. Tolerance must be tempered with a societal common standard while protecting individual freedoms. Pretty tricky stuff isn’t it? So the next time you hear someone preaching tolerance ask yourself, where is this tolerance going to lead us?

Ax To Grind

June 12th, 2006, 2:24 pm by elburton

We laugh at Jeff Foxworthy and his "You know you are a redneck if" routine, we roll on the ground listening to Chris Rock curse un-mercifully and use the "N" word with reckless abandon as he pokes fun at his race and others, and the new comedy hit on Comedy Central is the Mind of Mencia where we bust a gut laughing as Carlos Mencia does bit after bit on Latin Americans but hell hath no furry like a city manager who has an ax to grind when it comes to police officers swapping what he terms as "racially insensitive" emails. With the revelation that city employees and police officers are facing huge suspensions I want to focus on the racial component of this investigation. I realize that there are other factors but as I read the Tribune articles on the subject I found the comments of Bill Strauss who is the head of the Arizona chapter of the Anti-Defamation league to be interesting, "Fueling that with racial jokes and messages that promote racial and ethnic stereotyping could be dangerous," he said, continuing he stated, "It actually could compel somebody to cross the line legally." Mr. Strauss and I disagree a bit on this one; I do think that sexually explicit emails are a bit worse and more disconcerting than jokes.I will say that I honestly don’t believe that work email should be used for non-work issues but I think that when we have crazy people like Bill Strauss running around saying that jokes could cause people to cross some imaginary legal line is like saying that if you eat watermelon seeds you run the risk of growing an actual watermelon in your stomach, it simply isn’t reality. Are there racists among us? Sure there is but this wholesale scare tactics isn’t the answer either. If you want to battle something learn to laugh about it, why do you think that all the comics I referenced above have made it so big, I can assure you that it isn’t because they are labeled racists, it is because they have learned how to find humor in everything. Live a little, learn to laugh at yourself, your race, your quirks and your malfunctions just don’t share it on your work email account… Here is a joke for Mr. Strauss, how many members of the Anti-defamation league does it take to screw in a light bulb? None because they just sit around and wait for someone else to change it so they can call them racists, I never said I was a comedian…

TaxFest

June 9th, 2006, 2:42 pm by elburton

Considering my outspoken rants over the proposed property tax that Mesa residents just voted down this may come as a shock to some of you. I recently received an email from a close friend that I thought I would share. It illustrates in vivid detail what is wrong with this country. It demonstrates just how intrusive government has become. It shows how government is like a cancer, if left unchecked it grows to the point where it kills the host. Ladies and gentlemen, boy’s and girls, you are the host and the cancer is taxes. It is killing you and you have yet to diagnose yourself. Let me share with you just a few of the taxes that you are responsible for every day of your working life: Accounts Receivable Tax, Building Permit Tax, Capital Gains Tax, CDL license Tax, Cigarette Tax, Corporate Income Tax, Court Fines, (indirect taxes), Dog License Tax, Federal Unemployment Tax, (FUTA), Fishing License Tax, Food License Tax. Fuel permit tax, Gasoline Tax,(42 cents per gallon), Hunting License Tax, Inheritance Tax Interest expense, (tax on the money), Inventory tax IRS Interest Charges, (tax on top of tax), IRS Penalties, (tax on top of tax), Liquor Tax, Local Income Tax, Luxury Taxes, Marriage License Tax, Medicare Tax, Property Tax, Real Estate Tax, Septic Permit Tax, Service Charge Taxes, Social Security Tax, Road Usage Taxes, (Truckers), Sales Taxes, Recreational Vehicle Tax, Road Toll Booth Taxes, School Tax, State Income Tax, State Unemployment Tax, (SUTA), Telephone federal excise tax, Telephone federal universal service fee tax, Telephone federal, state and, local surcharge taxes, Telephone minimum usage surcharge tax, Telephone recurring and non-recurring charges tax, Telephone state and local tax, Telephone usage charge tax, Toll Bridge Taxes, Toll Tunnel Taxes, Traffic Fines, (indirect taxation), Trailer Registration Tax, Utility Taxes, Vehicle License Registration Tax, Vehicle Sales Tax, Watercraft Registration Tax, Well Permit Tax, Workers Compensation Tax. 100 years ago not one of these taxes existed. Before that we were the most prosperous nation on the face of the earth. There was no such thing as a national debt or a trade deficit. We had the largest middle class in the world. There was such a thing as a single income family where mothers had the chance to stay at home and raise their children. We owned things back then, now our government owns us. We have become slaves to taxes, no longer working for ourselves we find ourselves indebted to the government.

No More Frills

June 7th, 2006, 10:22 am by elburton

So what did we go through the exercise of dividing a citizenry over the need for a property tax? In some ways I come to this Blog with my hat in my hand, the Mesa City Council has tentatively adopted a new budget and this is not a budget that looks like a city in crisis. It is a bloated budget of record proportions. Many of the things that we were told would suffer seem to have found funding. My biggest fear and the scare tactic that worked so well on me was the threat that the fire and police departments would be decimated if the property tax didn’t pass. Well, I guess that I was wrong. It appears that the new budget includes pay raise and pension increases for our officers to the tune of $7.6 million. Members of the city council quipped that they would like future budgets to be easier for residents to comprehend. Here is a message for the City Council, if you want to put together a budget that we can understand then just follow the same rule that we are faced with every day, don’t spend more than you take in, and don’t ask for an increase in your allowance if you haven’t done anything to earn it. Many of the cuts are going to be painful, but not life threatening. Government is not the answer for everything. Some of the things being cut like holiday lighting, special events and funding for art groups can be picked up by private non-governmental interests. If the citizens of Mesa don’t want to adopt a property tax and they want some of these programs to continue then they will step up and take care of it through the generosity of charitable giving. This city is chugging along, sure we are going to be short a few things but isn’t that how life works, when you make less money at home you cut some of the frills out of your life until you can afford to do them again. Let’s focus now on holding our Council Members accountable for spending our money, after all, they just adopted a budget that include almost a billion dollars of it.

Acess?

June 5th, 2006, 11:39 am by elburton

I read an article over the weekend that made me realize exactly why average citizens don’t trust this city’s government when it comes to spending their hard earned tax dollars. The city is accepting bids from wireless internet providers and wants to set up a two mile test area to provide laptops and other mobile devices with wireless access points. The ultimate goal would be to have the city wired so that everyone could have access to the World Wide Web. In a city where we have just weathered an election in which we were told that unless we passed a primary property tax our budget would be slashed. We have been warned that Resource Officers will be cut from our schools and that employees would have to be cut and that in order to raise much needed money for our city’s survival we would have to sell bonds. Now I read that for this city in crisis we are accepting bids from content providers in the hope that whenever we leave our front door we can remain connected to the WWW… Now this would be great, for me, but what about those citizens who don’t have access to a laptop or a mobile device? Unless these bids contain statements that the content providers are going to build this network, maintain this network, advertise it and take up the cost of it, I don’t see nor do I understand how a city council can even entertain this concept let alone take bids for it. Being wireless would be nice, but having the police and fire personnel we need as well as roads that are drivable seems a bit more important. Of course that is just my take.
